Bullet hitting block on spring

Student 3057 8 years ago updated by Physics Tutorial Center Staff 8 years ago 1

A 2 g bullet with a velocity of 100 m/s hits a 4 kg block connected to a spring with a force constant of 100 N/m. If the bullet completely embeds itself in the block, what is the period and amplitude of the blocks oscillations?

The period is 2*pi/w where w=sqrt(K/m).

The amplitude is determined by the kinetic energy after the collision by .5KA^2= .5mv^2, so A=v* sqrt(m/K).

To find the velocity, use conservation of momentum for the inelastic collision of the bullet and the block.
