Kinetic Energy of a Proton

Student 5051 9 years ago updated by Physics Tutorial Center Staff 9 years ago 1

I am a bit confused on how to find the kinetic energy of a proton which is in a magnetic and moving in a circular motion of radius .500 m. (B = .150 T).

I imagine I need a velocity in order to make this work with T = 1/2mv^2 but how do I get v?

A charged particle moving in a uniform magnetic field will travel in a circle -- this is the cyclotron effect. The formula for the cyclotron radius is

r = mv/qB

See if you can use that to find the speed v.
